Twenty-four Mississippi State building construction science students spent their summer designing and constructing a building that will serve as a modular fabrication shop for their department during upcoming renovations on campus.
The students were part of MSU Assistant Professor Mohsen Garshasby鈥檚 first-year summer session studio鈥攁 fast-paced, compact option available to incoming BCS majors. The course included a lecture, or technical, portion that went hand-in-hand with the building, or fabrication.
Studio A, which was taught in June, focused on drawings, construction documents, blueprints, design process and building materials. Fabrication work included the foundation and framing up to the sheathing aspect of the building. In July, Studio B鈥檚 classroom focus was building systems鈥攚all, roof and floor systems鈥攁s well as doors, windows and interior finishes. Also included was insulation, cladding systems and roof work.
The structure is providing an additional hands-on project for students in this semester鈥檚 mechanical electrical class, who are running electrical wire and potentially plumbing to finalize the shop.
